FAQ (the Writing Specialist program is discontinued until further notice)

The Stanford Writing Specialist program locates lecturers from the Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) in a range of departments and programs to support undergraduate writing and the teaching of writing across all four years of study. Funded by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Writing Specialist program grew out of the 2012 SUES Committee’s recommendation that experienced writing instructors should serve as “formal writing consultants” in departments and programs across the university.

How do I get course prep consultation?

If you are an instructor in Stanford's Public Policy Program, you will receive a form to fill out your quarterly workshop requests, due before the first week of classes for the applicable term. If you have not received the online form, please reach out to the Writing Specialist before the quarter begins. In the event you require a workshop as the quarter progresses but did not complete a request, please contact the Writing Specialist to coordinate with her available schedule, the Hume Center for Writing and Speaking, and/or the Stanford Law School Law & Policy Lab.

How do I make a tutoring appointment?

If you are a Public Policy Program student, teaching assistant, or instructor, you may make individual 30 minute or 1 hour appointments, or drop-in as available. You may also meet with the Writing Specialist at the Hume Center by making an appointment on TutorTrac. Remember that you don't have to have anything written; you can meet for tutoring at the brainstorming stage, as well as for resumes, cover letters, websites, and more! If it involves writing, bring it in!

Keep in mind that last-minute appointments are often not possible, although the Writing Specialist tries to be flexible. Try to make an appointment well before an assignment is due. Also remember that writing tutors are not copy editors. If you are in need of a copy editor, you may hire a paid professional in the area; the Hume Center keeps a list at the front desk.

Appointments are only available to the Stanford community.
